A Beginner's Guide to Premium Cigars: Everything You Need to Know

Walking into a cigar lounge or attending your first Fuego Fashion event can feel intimidating if you're new to cigars. Don't worry—everyone starts somewhere. This guide will give you the confidence to enjoy premium cigars like a seasoned aficionado.

Understanding Cigar Basics

Anatomy of a Cigar

Every cigar consists of three parts:

  • Filler: The tobacco leaves at the cigar's core, providing most of the flavor
  • Binder: A leaf that holds the filler together
  • Wrapper: The outermost leaf, contributing significantly to flavor and appearance

Ring Gauge & Length

Ring gauge measures a cigar's diameter in 64ths of an inch. A 50 ring gauge cigar is 50/64 inches thick. Larger ring gauges generally burn cooler and longer.

Length affects smoking time. A 6-inch cigar typically provides 45-60 minutes of enjoyment.

Choosing Your First Cigar

For beginners, we recommend starting with:

  • Mild to medium strength to avoid overwhelming your palate
  • Connecticut wrapper cigars, known for their smooth, creamy profile
  • Moderate ring gauge (48-52) for balanced flavor and comfortable smoking
  • Reputable brands like Arturo Fuente, Oliva, or Ashton

The Cutting Ritual

Before lighting, you must cut the cap (closed end) to allow airflow. There are three common methods:

Straight Cut

The most popular method. Use a guillotine cutter to remove about 1/16 inch from the cap. This provides the most open draw.

V-Cut (Wedge Cut)

Creates a wedge-shaped notch in the cap. Offers a concentrated draw and works well with torpedos.

Punch Cut

A small circular blade punches a hole in the cap. Creates the most restricted draw but keeps the cap intact.

Pro tip: Cut conservatively. You can always cut more, but you can't put tobacco back.

Lighting Like a Pro

Proper lighting ensures an even burn throughout your smoke:

  1. Toast the foot: Hold the cigar at a 45-degree angle and rotate it over the flame without touching, until the edges begin to glow
  2. Light the center: Place the cigar in your mouth and draw while continuing to rotate over the flame
  3. Check your light: Gently blow on the foot to ensure an even, glowing cherry

What to use: Butane lighters or wooden matches. Avoid Zippos, candles, or paper matches—they can impart unwanted flavors.

Smoking Technique

The Draw

Unlike cigarettes, you don't inhale cigar smoke. Draw smoke into your mouth, savor the flavors, and exhale. Think of it like tasting fine wine.

Pacing

Take a puff every 30-60 seconds. Smoking too fast heats the cigar and creates harsh flavors. Too slow, and it may go out.

Ashing

Let ash build to about an inch before gently tapping it off. A long ash indicates quality construction and proper humidity.

Cigar Etiquette

A few unwritten rules of the cigar world:

  • Never light someone else's cigar without being asked—it's their ritual
  • Don't crush out your cigar like a cigarette; simply let it extinguish naturally
  • Remove the band after the cigar has warmed (about 1/3 through) to avoid tearing the wrapper
  • Don't dip cigars in whiskey or cognac—it's considered poor form
  • Share your experience, not your germs—don't offer a cigar you've already smoked

Storing Your Cigars

If you're buying cigars to enjoy later, proper storage is essential:

  • Invest in a humidor or use a sealed container with humidity control
  • Maintain 65-70% humidity and 65-70°F temperature
  • Let cigars rest for a few days after purchase before smoking

Common Beginner Mistakes

  1. Inhaling: Cigar smoke is meant to be tasted, not inhaled
  2. Smoking too fast: Patience reveals the best flavors
  3. Choosing too strong: Start mild and work your way up
  4. Poor storage: Dried-out cigars smoke harsh and burn unevenly
  5. Giving up too soon: Your palate develops over time
